After a successful career as a radio announcer and programmer at Philadelphia’s premier radio station WYSP-FM, Somach formed Denny Somach Productions.
The company has since become one of the most successful independent producers of syndicated and network radio programming in the country. DSP’s landmark programming includes Legends of Rock, Live From the Hard Rock Cafe for NBC; Rolling Stone Magazine’s Continuous History of Rock and Roll for ABC; Scott Muni’s Ticket to Ride; During 1999 DSP created and produced one of the most successful radio shows of the year, The Rock of the Century, for Dick Clark’s United Stations. The program evolved into The Classics, a two-hour weekly retrospective now in its fifth year and running on over 130 rock radio stations. Just recently DSP produced "Meet The Beatles…Again" hosted by Pat O’Brien and will be debuting a new radio series that O’Brien will host on a daily basis.
Somach has also developed and supervised numerous television productions. He served as a producer and reporter for Evening/PM Magazine and also had his own show on KYW-TV entitled The Rock and Roll Show. A special edition of the program was produced for CBS-TV that featured an exclusive appearance by the Rolling Stones. For NBC-TV, he helped develop the network’s Friday Night Videos, and also conducted interviews for the show. Denny was also a contributor to the long-running syndicated music show Solid Gold.
Denny Somach has been involved in various capacities with several cable networks. As an original consultant to MTV, Somach was in charge of organizing the channel’s News Department and produced their first outside program, The News That Rocked ’81. Phil Collins hosted the 1983 version and Julian Lennon made his television debut as host of The News That Rocked ‘84.
Somach developed and co-hosted his own weekly concert series, Hot Spots, on the USA Network. The show was responsible for launching the national careers of the Hooters, Georgia Satellites, Pieces of a Dream, The Johnny Van Zandt Band and others.
Somach was selected by Ted Turner to serve as director of his Cable Music Channel, which was sold to Warner/Amex and became VH1. When HBO created the Comedy Channel (Comedy Central) he was brought aboard to help with the launch. Denny was hired as a promotional and content consultant by XM RADIO, the new 100-channel satellite radio service that debuted in the fall of 2001 and he served as a consultant to The Fine Living Network one of the fastest-growing networks which was recently recognized with a "Best of Industry" award. Currently Denny is a Music & Entertainment contributor to Comcast’s CN8 network.
As a major private collector and a pioneer in the category of music collectibles, Denny Somach has successfully negotiated licenses and autograph rights with The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Bon Jovi, AC/DC, Stevie Wonder, Yes, Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Dwight Yoakum, Selena, Alice Cooper, The Who, The Monkees, Jethro Tull, Emerson Lake and Palmer, BB King and others.
Somach was one of the early pioneers in the development and production of long form music infomercials. He worked with Wolfman Jack on the first ever 30-minute music infomercial. The project was Solid Gold Rock ‘n Roll, which has sold in excess of $18,000,000 since it debuted in 1988. He also produced Sixty Greatest Hits of the Sixties, another long form record collection infomercial, that featured Davy Jones of the Monkees as host and was the first package of its kind to be developed with a major record label, CBS Records. Somach’s format has been used as the model for Time-Life, Rhino, Rolling Stone Magazine and others.
In the field of record and video production, Somach has worked with Johnny Winter, Yes, Todd Rundgren, Alan Parsons, Barbara Mandrell, Pete Bardens, Dave Mason, Asia, Mick Fleetwood, Justin Hayward, Patrick Moraz and others. Denny is the Executive Producer of Eric Johnson’s aural masterpiece, AH VIA MUSICOM. The R.I.A.A. certified ‘platinum’ album features the 1992 Grammy Award winning song, "Cliffs of Dover."
A recognized rock and roll authority, Somach has appeared on numerous television shows, including: The Today Show, Larry King Live, The Early Show on CBS, The Home Show, The Joan Rivers Show, Dateline NBC, CNN’s Moneyline, Showbiz Today, Treasures In Your Home, The Big Breakfast Show (UK) and other programs. He is also the author of Ticket to Ride (Wm Morrow & Co. 1989) and Meet The Beatles.....Again (1995.)
Somach received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Moravian College in Bethlehem, PA . He currently lives in the Philadelphia suburbs.
